The
first volume of John Tyrrell's biography of Janček, the
culmination of a life's work on the composer, will
be published by Faber and Faber in November. The biography provides the
most detailed account of Janček's life in
any language and offers new views of him as composer, writer, thinker
and human being, drawing extensively on key sources from the Brno
archive.
Volume 1, which goes up to the outbreak of the First World War and the
composer's 60th birthday, consists of 28 chapters providing a
straightforward chronological account of his life and forty contextual
chapters. These include chapters on Janček as a teacher,
theorist and ethnographer and his relationship to influential works such
as Charpentier's Louise and Tchaikovsky's The Queen of Spades.
